DaKine is a company, that is associated with extreme, risks, wind and waves, and there is no surprise in it, for the company was created on Hawaii islands and even bears a Hawaiian name. “Da kine” in Hawaiian Pidgin means “of the kind” or simple “the best”. The company is well-known for selling sportswear and sports-equipment.
Bob Kaplan started his business in 1979 in Haiku, Maui , Hawaii. His first creation was DaKine surf leash that was well-estimated by the surfers. In 1980 professional surfers trusted Kaplan and his mastery so much, that they asked him to make up adjustable footstraps for the boards. These footstraps together with seat harness and waist harness started the line of sports accessories.
In 1986 DaKine opened its office in the North America. The place for the headquarters was wisely chosen – it was Hood River, Oregon. The fact is , that the town is located near hood mountain, a number one place for American mountaineers, and, certainly, this helped Kaplan to promote his goods.
In 1990 DaKine also broadened the line of its products, for example, introduced three new models of gloves and created special backcountry skiing and backcountry snowboarding day packs. In 1999 the first skateboard back pack by DaKine was launched. Today DaKine back packs are beloved not only by professional sportsmen – they have become a part of alternative urban culture and are considered to be very fashionable. DaKine products are characterized not only by high quality, but also by interesting designs and bright colours and patterns. Probably, it is this brightness, that attracts so many young people to DaKine.
