Nike brand has known a remarkable and very distinct history until now. In 1940s, Bill Bowerman, a middle-distance running coach, and Phil Knight, at that time a student at Stanford University, decided to set up their own shoe making business. They allocated the duties - Bill Bowerman was supposed to do all the designing stuff, whereas Phil Knight had to test the quality of the sports shoes at first hand. It was Phil who settled on a name for their future company - Blue Ribbon Sports that was later changed to Nike company. The enterprising partners’ main aim was to devise high quality running shoes that would be available at a moderate price. They hit the spot, as at that time cheap US made shoes were of poor quality, whereas high quality German made ones cost six times as much.
Soon Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman succeeded to conclude the contract with Onitsuka Shoe company located in Japan and received an exclusive right to sell and promote their sneakers on the territory of the USA. At first they bought as little as 300 pairs of Onitsuka sneakers and took them to pieces in order to improve their design. Having undergone fundamental modernization, the sneakers were snapped up straight away. A year later the partners placed another order for a new lot of goods with the same company.
Their business was on the rise, so Bill and Phil decided to take on a sales manager. Jeff Johnson who became the manager was the first to lay down the foundations of CRM system of Blue Ribbon Sports company. Soon the company opened its first store in Santa Monica, California, and broke the contract with Onitsuka Shoe company.
Jeff Johnson is considered to have had a dream about gorgeous Grecian goddess of victory who inspired him to change the company’s name to Nike. BTW, a famous Swoosh logo symbolizes the wing of this Grecian goddess. Nowadays Nike company makes wide range of products from highest quality shoes to apparel and accessories.
