Samsonite Company history has begun in 1910 with “Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company” which was founded by Jessie Schweider. The aim was very simple: to produce the luggage that would bear even a hard journey, originally the gold rush.
Schweider began its business with 6 workers and one basic product – a cheap suitcase. Company’s trade mark was a photo of Schweider, his father and his three brothers standing on the cover of the open suitcase.
Company success was caused by the products that satisfied the customers’ needs. Jessie said that if a suitcase was more reliable and attractive than that of his rivals, it should compete with them in price. It should be sold due to its advantages.
In the year 1941 before World War II Jessie Schweider presented a new luggage line - Samsonite Streamlite. This line allowed the company to take the first position at luggage market. It was called Samsonite as the name of Schweider’s favorite Bible hero – Samson, who was strong and capable of great endurance.
Streamlite line was made from vulcanize fibers that was lasted on the wooden frame. It was the first time when the customers bought natural material products for a low price.
In the beginning of the 1950s during the reactive aviation boom luggage manufacturers began to think about the new luggage types that will satisfy the customers’ needs of that time and in future. Streamlite was still popular but Shcweider brothers began to produce a new line that would please a modern traveler.
The result was the appearance of “Silhouette” line, the most advanced luggage of that time. Locks, joints and case were made in the similar style. The uniqueness of the line was the mechanical construction that was hidden and therefore it was protected from wear and damage.
By the year 1965 “Samsonite” trade mark had become famous all over the world. Its production was widespread. The company name turned from Shwayder Bros., Inc into Samsonite Corporation. This new name was symbolical: the time was changing and so the name was.
In 1991 when the “iron curtain” was destroyed in Eastern Europe Samsonite tourist luggage Company began to promote its production there. The company contributed into the economy of these countries by investing.
Today the main philosophy of the company is the tireless improvement of the product quality. The company has their own laboratories where they experience new models before it comes to the market. Samsonite’s innovative approach to materials has always given it the leading position at the market.
